Next event as part of Glasgow Requiem announced 2 Sept Written By Angus Farquhar Necropolis Flower Memorial Planting Saturday Sept 21st and Sunday Sept 22nd 2024, 1pmJoin Aproxima Arts, Scouse Flowerhouse, and Anniesland College for a special planting event at Glasgow’s Necropolis, the latest activity as part of Glasgow Requiem. Help plant 33,000 spring bulbs as a living memorial, with live music, poetry, and food. This very special event is part of Glasgow Doors Open Days 2024.This event honours the thousands laid to rest in unmarked graves at the Necropolis. Participants will progess from the Bridge of Sighs to the Eta Compartment, Glasgow’s largest common grave, for an act of remembrance adding meaning to our collective past. The planting will be accompanied by live music from cello and violin duo Sequoia, including a live performance of "Sweet Afton" by Alex Hume, whose final resting place is at the common grave. Plus poetry by Makar Kathleen Jamie and new Glaswegians, and poignant words from celebrants Gerrie and Susan Douglas-Scott. A 2-metre memorial wreath by Ruby Flowers, woven from wildflowers, will be created on-site, and a water dedication from the ancient Molendinar Burn will be included. The event concludes with shared food at a pop-up café, with dishes made by Glasgow Clyde College and Ibrahim Alissi, who runs Kitchen Glasgow, using potatoes grown by young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees from Anniesland College.The event is free but places must be reserved in advance.
